ICANN, the Internet group responsible for domain names, has just opened the floodgates and agreed to add more top level domains in the mix which currently include .com, .org and .gov to name a few. A meeting held this week has already approved the plan to have entities worldwide to register their preferred domain. This means that Apple can now avail of the .apple domain or Sony can avail of .sony.
The price won’t be cheap though with an initial application cost of $185,000. The amount will not be refunded if the application is rejected. Then there is the annual fee of $25,000 once the domain name being registered is approved.
The fees might be a little bit on the high side but ICANN explained that a portion of the fees will b used to hire more technicians to process the applications and to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Another reason why the price is high is that ICANN wants to prevent squatters from registering a domain then selling it later on at a higher price.
Applications for the new domain names start on January 12, 2012 and will and on April 12, 2012. Those who are expected to avail of this offer are corporations, businesses and cities.
