technocator: Wikipedia celebrated its 10th anniversary

Wikipedia, the much popular encyclopedia on the Internet, has celebrated its 10 anniversary around the world on 15th January 2010. Unlike other websites, Wikipedia contents are advertisement free and freely available to everyone, and its content is added and edited by volunteers around the world.

Official Wikipedia has only around 50 paid employees, but thousands of the Wikipedia lovers around the world help this free encyclopedia to grow further by contributing their effort.

Wikipedia was started in 2001 by an American free software enthusiast, Jimmy Wales, and the growth of Wikipedia was very rapid and now it has become known for most of the human being who use the Internet. It is especially useful for students and for those who do research in certain subjects.

The celebration of the 10 anniversary also got its own diverse feature. The Wikipedia volunteers located around the world organized events around hundreds of world cities. This has boosted the publicity of Wikipedia and most people came forward with the interest to contribute their knowledge to this free encyclopedia.
